Position: Legislative Aide
Office of Delegate Ariana Kelly
Vice Chair, Health and Government Operations Committee

Salary: $40,000-$50,000 depending on experience and qualifications
Job Type: Full-time

Health and Government Operations Committee Vice Chair Ariana Kelly is seeking a legislative staffer to support a fast-paced legislative office.

Delegate Kelly is recognized for her work on healthcare access, economic opportunity, children’s issues and women’s rights. This is an excellent opportunity for the right person interested in leading a dynamic legislative office that is working on advancing progressive policies at the state level.

Delegate Kelly serves as Vice Chair of  the Health and Government Operations Committee. She also chairs the Joint Committee on Children, Youth, and Families, and the Health Occupations and Long-Term Care Subcommittee. Delegate Kelly’s past legislative successes include legislation protecting abortion rights in Maryland, requiring insurance coverage for autism treatment, expanding vaccine access, establishing parental leave and childcare affordability legislation.

Potential Duties:

  • Maintain Vice Chair’s calendar; schedule appointments and meetings
  • Maintain communications systems including website, database, social media and email communications including Facebook, Twitter and Monthly Email Newsletters
  • Draft legislative testimony, official correspondence, press releases, newsletters, and constituent communications
  • Attend hearings, meetings, and in-district events as necessary
  • Lead constituent outreach and casework services
  • Research potential legislation and oversee bill drafting and amendment coordination and drafting
  • Coordinate bill hearings
  • Maintain scholarship program and distribute scholarships yearly
  • Interview, hire, train, and supervise Legislative Assistants, Fellows and interns.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree is strongly recommended. Graduate degree in law, public policy or health care preferred.
  • Experience with the legislative process and/or legislative advocacy
  • Possess superior writing and editing skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects
  • Availability for extended work hours, including late night and weekend work, during the 90-day legislative session (Januar- April). Significant schedule flexibility and virtual work is available during the legislative interim (May−December)
  • Ability to work independently and with limited guidance
  • Experience with Google Office Suite and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Positive attitude and great sense of humor

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience
  • Experience using Constant Contact
  • Experience in a Maryland General Assembly office

Internship Opportunities

An Internship with Delegate Ariana Kelly can be a rewarding and exciting experience!

Delegate Kelly’s former interns have gone on to work for Members of Congress, national political organizations, think tanks, public health and women’s rights organizations. They are also among the senior staff at offices across Annapolis. 

Course credit and a stipend is available.

Representing District 16 of Montgomery County, which includes Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac, North Bethesda and parts of Rockville, Delegate Ariana Kelly is the Vice Chair of the Health and Government Operations Committee. She is a leader on healthcare, family economic security and women’s issues in Annapolis. She is committed to providing exciting opportunities for smart and resourceful student interns who wish to become engaged in public policy through her legislative office.

Fall Interns must be available September through early December and able to work 12-20 hours a week, generally virtually with specific in-person events in Bethesda. Session interns must be available January – April with 2-3 days a week in Annapolis.  Undergraduate, graduate, or recent grads are welcome to apply. Political Science, Government, Public Policy, Health fields, Law, Women’s Studies or similar concentrations are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities and opportunities include:

  • Constituent communications
  • Community outreach and engagement
  • Creating social media content
  • Scheduling
  • Conducting research on bills, constituent issues, & potential stakeholders
  • Writing, preparing, and organizing Delegate and witness testimony for bill hearings
  • Attending committee hearings and stakeholder meetings
  • Meeting with constituents, lobbyists, or other advocates
  • Supporting work for Joint Committee on Children, Youth and Families
  • Supporting work for Healthcare Workforce Commission
  • Supporting work for Medicaid Advisory Committee
  • Supporting work for Abortion Access Coalition
  • ​Providing general support to Delegate Kelly and her staff

Qualifications include excellent communication (including social media), research, writing, and interpersonal skills. The ability to manage multiple tasks, take initiative, and the ability to work independently. Must be fully committed to women’s rights and equitable healthcare access.
